Turtle Love

Edition 19 Newsletter

We recently spent some time in beautiful Cozumel, Mexico.  One day we accompanied some local school children and a biologist to watch the turtle hatchlings run to the ocean under the guidance of the moonlight (please go to www.cozumelinsider.com/turtles for more information).  Last year’s hurricanes dumped sand along the beaches in Cozumel. The turtles, of course, love the sand for digging pits to lay their eggs.  Cozumel is going to great lengths to educate their community and provide a safe place for turtles to return to lay their eggs.  It’s a breath-taking experience to watch the tiny green sea turtles as they clamor across the sand towards the waiting sea. It's amazing that ANY turtles live, much less 1 out of 4.

Since I was a little girl getting to stay up past my bedtime to see Jacques Cousteau and National Geographic specials, I’ve watched and learned about how the turtles lay eggs and what a scramble for life it is for the hatchlings not only to get to the sea alive, but also to be able to figure out how to survive once they are in the sea.  It was something entirely different to watch the turtles run in-person.  For one thing you could feel the ancient energy propelling them forward towards the sea. Nothing was going to get in their way.  For another, you could sense the single-mindedness of each turtle, which was to survive.

After watching these turtles spring forward so that they could get on to the living at hand, I certainly looked at my life in a different way.  I realized that if we could just harness that same focus, then there would be nothing that we could not accomplish.

We can also look around at our lives and, no matter where we are, be grateful that we’re more than an inch long and don’t have a soft shell. Unlike the turtles there are many people and places available to help us survive the monsters of the deep.  The opportunities for helping ourselves are out there when we are willing to ask for them.  We do not have to do this life of ours alone.  Whether we are the CEO of a multi-million dollar company or the janitor making sure that the desks are turned upright and the trash is emptied out---when we ask for help and accept it, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish.

Where is the moonlight along your path leading you today?
